Many people in the church don't know what board members do or what their titles mean, so we put together a glossary to clarify.

Board Chairperson - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Sets the agenda and chairs the monthly Board meetings. Upholds the Code of Regulations and the Personnel and Risk Management Policies. Appoints members to standing committees and has ex-officio status on all committees. Serves as a member of the Finance Committee, appoints Search Committees as applicable when staff vacancies occur, and calls special Board meetings when necessary.

Vice Chairperson - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Chairs the Board in the chairperson’s absence or when requested by the Board chairperson. Serves on the Risk Management Committee.

Board Clerk - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Records minutes of monthly and special meetings of the Official Board. Records the minutes of the Annual Congregational meeting and special congregational meetings. Submits minutes to the Church Administration Manager for file and distribution to the Board members. Records additions or corrections to the minutes as required. Reads correspondence at the Board meetings and serves as a member of the Finance Committee.

Board Treasurer - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Submits Financial Reports for review and approval at all Board meetings. Prepares the proposed annual budget for the Finance Committee. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings. Attends all Finance Committee meetings.

Financial Secretary - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Responsible for the collection, recording, and reporting of contributions through congregational offerings. Provides a written report of giving to the Board Treasurer for submission at the regular monthly Board meetings. Provides a written record of giving to all contributors via regular statements. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings.

Assistant Financial Secretary - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Assists the Financial Secretary with the collection and recording of contributions through congregational offerings. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings.

Financial Assistant - Elected by the Official Board at the January Board meeting for a term of one year. Assist with the counting and verification of cash contributions through congregational offerings.

Elders - Provide spiritual leadership in worship services and in all matters of the church. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings. Assists in the Assimilation of new and prospective members. Chairperson serves on the Finance and Executive Committees. Attends monthly Elders’ meeting. Provide visitation and communion to shut-ins and rotate Wednesday visitation to those hospitalized. Preside at the Communion Table during worship and give Offering statements. Provide additional assistance and all these areas when a pastor is on vacation. Serve a three year term.

Deacons - Responsible for collecting offering, serving communion and preparing communion. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings. Assists in the Assimilation of new and prospective members. Chairperson serves on the Finance and Executive Committees. Serve a three year term.

Ushers - Greet, assist with seating, assist with offering collection, and serving of communion. Take attendance counts. Attends and participates in all regular and specially-called Board meetings. Assists in the Assimilation of new and prospective members. Chairperson serves on the Finance and Executive Committees. Serve a three year term.

Trustees - Serve as the caretakers of the material and physical well being of the church. Responsible for maintaining the church property. Rotate duties on a monthly basis. All trustees attend and participate in all regular and specially-called Board meetings. Chairperson works with the Building Operations Manager to maintain budget accountability, assign, coordinate and check progress on projects and repairs and call trustee meetings when necessary, and serves as a member of the Finance Committee and the Executive Committee. All trustees must be able to do basic electrical, plumbing, and woodworking repairs and be aware of building codes and regulations. Serve a three year term.
